2008 Class Schedule
Located in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains
in Seymour, TN - the Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg Area

Beginner Class: Will cover basic skills required to get you started on the right foot with Intarsia. You should have some skill using a scroll saw. If not, we suggest you take a scroll saw course or practice on your scroll saw before attending the class. We will cover each step, using an easier pattern to help you to have a good understanding of this technique.

The first day (Wednesday)we discuss the importance of using dry lumber, wood selection, working with a pattern, and you will begin scroll sawing the intarsia duck. Judy will share her ideas on wood selection, learning to use the grain to enhance your intarsia projects. You will have some choices on wood to use on your duck. Jerry will work with you scroll sawing, he covers general information about scroll saw blades as well as which blade works best for different species of wood.

The second day (Thursday) you will begin sanding and shaping your duck. This is the part most people want some help with. The classroom envirounment is a great place to learn. Judy will sand a section of the duck, then you will go to your work station and sand the same section. Judy will walk around to answer questions and make suggestions. You will have most of the duck roughed in by the end of the second day.

The third day (Friday) will be a little more relaxed, you will start adding the detail to the duck. Also, it's Bar-B-Que day, we don't want to give you too much work after a big Texas Bar-B-Que. After the duck has been sanded you will cut a backing out for your duck. You will not apply a finish to the duck you are working on. Instead we will continue the process with the duck Judy is working on. You will help apply the finish to the duck parts. Then Judy will cover her techniques for gluing the duck to the backing. This is a part many people have trouble with.
We have been making the duck for a few years in the Beginner class, it is a great project to build a strong foundation.

We are looking at the calendar to squeeze another beginner class in. If you are interested, please call and put your name on our list. (800) 316-9010 or email Jerry

Intermediate Class: Will move quickly through the wood selection and layout. We will work on improving your scrollsawing, and then spend a majority of the time on shaping and adding texture to your project. You should have made 8 to 10 Intarsia projects before this class. It would be best if you take the beginner class before the Intermediate class. We have noticed the students that take the beginner class first have a easy time keeping up with the pace. If not we suggest you make more projects before attending the class. You will be more familiar with the technique and perhaps bring up more questions that can help you in problem areas. Judy will design a new project each year for the Intermediate class. 2007 we are making the cat in the bag below, I am working on the project for 2008.

We try to finish up the project by 3:00 pm on Friday.
This year we are asking students to help clean their work station at the end of the day. It only takes a few minutes to vacuum up the saw dust.
Prices: Classes are $450.00. This includes lunches for three days and all materials.
You will take home a project that is sanded / shaped, backing cut out, and ready to put a finish on. We do not put a finish on the projects the students make, the finish takes too long to dry. We will put a finish on the project Judy is working on and glue it down to cover these last two important steps.
